A very rare gilt brass English chronometer carriage timepiece. The 3-inch enamel dial signed E White, 20 Cockspur Street, London with seconds dial and set within a gilt engine-turned mask, the fusee and chain movement signed E White, 20 Cockspur Street, London, No. 793, the deeply planted platform with Earnshaw's spring detent escapement and compensated balance with blued helical balance spring and Harrison's maintaining power. The case with cruciform corner pillars and ball finials, similar handle and dust shutters to the back door.

Edward White worked closely with Dent and is well known for his fine clocks and chronometers. For a similar clock see the Ex George Daniels chronometer carriage clock, Dent No. 19621 on our website. Edward White is recorded having premises at 20 Cockspur Street, Pall Mall London from 1861 to 1890. He exhibited at The Great International London Exhibition in 1862 and had a four page advertisement in the catalogue, He received a prize medal for a giant quarter-chiming carriage clock which was critically acclaimed by Charles Frodsham. He further exhibited at the Dublin and Paris Exhibitions, of 1865 and 1867 respectively, and won another medal at Dublin for ‘great taste and excellence of workmanship’ (see Richard Good, Victorian Clocks, London, 1996, p. 110).
