A fine, large ormolu mounted black marble mantel timepiece. Circa 1852

Case

The black marble case with drum surmounted by the figure of an eagle and flames, the eagle with open wings peering to the left and grasping a baton with flames, flanked by two ormolu Canova crouching lions set on a plinth base with ormolu acanthus and bearded mask mount.

Dial

The five inch silvered dial signed Vulliamy London with Roman numerals and fine engine turned centre with rise and fall adjustment at XII. Blued steel Breguet style hands.

Movement

The eight day, single fusee circular movement with semi deadbeat escapement and rise and fall regulation to the heavy numbered pendulum bob. Signed on the backplate Vulliamy London and numbered 1921.

Height 16 ½ inches (42 cm)

Of the Vulliamy Lion clocks recorded, this example is the largest. The design of the lions was taken from those sculpted by Antonia Canova for the monument to Pope Clement XIII in St. Peters, Rome. The patterns may have been supplied by the known Vulliamy client, Thomas Hope.
