A fine bronze and ormolu mounted black marble mantel timepiece. Circa 1815
Case
The black marble case with drum surmounted by the figure of an eagle with open wings peering to the left, flanked by two bronze recumbent lions set on a plinth base. Ormolu circular bezel cast as a serpent biting its tail.
Dial
The 4 inch gilt dial with raised Roman numerals to a textured chapter and engine turned centre with rise and fall adjustment at XII. Blued steel open heart hands.
Movement
The eight day single fusee movement with semi deadbeat escapement with rise and fall regulation to the numbered pendulum. Signed on the backplate Vulliamy London and numbered 590.
Height 10 inches (26 cm)
Vulliamy made a series of lion timepieces similar to this clock, with drum cases and on rectangular plinths. A very similar clock numbered 538, was ordered by the Prince of Wales for Carlton House and subsequently was sold in the William F. Reilly Collection, Christie's, New York, 14 October 2009, lot 33 ($68,500).
